Under normal circumstances, the two cats who rule the roost at our house don’t get along.

As in they smack each other every chance they get.

As in they don’t know the meaning of playing well with each other.

As in… they fight like cats and dogs minus the dogs.

After The Heinous Cat came home from his 12-day vacation (accidentally locked in the neighbor’s storage shed and none of us could find him), he and The Interloper seem to be getting along better. Mostly.

We’re having a humungous project done in our back yard right now which is disturbing to both cats and humans. While it has put this human on edge, it seems to have brought the two felines together in their combined efforts to not be killed or eaten by all the foreign monsters invading their space.

The Heinous Cat has not had any problem maintaining his aloof, disinterested act. Except I’m not sure it is an act. He’s got a bit of an ego thing going on, too.

“No autographs, please. My people will get with your people. Goodbye.”

The Interloper is much more friendly and loving, if not somewhat bizarre.

“Do you see me, Mama? I’m right here! See me! Hello! Pretty kitty here!”

When Maizy (The Interloper) leaned over close to Drooley (The Heinous Cat), past history has shown this is the point where he will raise his paw and slap her silly.

Only this time…

This time…

They kitty-kissed. It was completely out of character and so sweet.

Maybe I need to have my back yard demolished more often if it will make these two get along.

Captain Cavedweller’s wonderful mother came for the weekend.

Our way of celebrating Mother’s Day is for the two of us to go to a shooting class the local gun club puts on through the NRA.

No tea parties with big hats and buttery scones for the two of us.

Nope.

We have semi-automatic weapons, the smell of gun powder and the need to blast bullets into a tiny little target.

Last year was the first year we took the Women on Target class and Cherry, CC’s mom, loved it so much I asked her if she wanted to do it again this year. She enthusiastically replied yes.

So she drove several hours just to spend the weekend with us.  CC was working Saturday which left us girls to go to the class and hang out all day. It was awesome.

Getting up bright and early, we both were excited about going to the class where we got to shoot no less than 20 different types of guns.

After shooting one 22 rifle, Cherry decided she was going home and buying one. She loved it.

My favorite part is the shotgun area where we got to blast clay pigeons out of the air. I really want my own shotgun and the ability to shoot these in my backyard. Yep. That’s what I’m holding out for.

Whether you like guns, fears guns or don’t know a thing about guns, I highly recommend this class for any woman. It’s a great time of sisterhood as well as a fantastic way to learn about guns, safe handling and just have some good old-fashioned fun.

Thanks to our local gun club for sponsoring the event and making us all feel so welcome!

Browsing on Pinterest the other day, I was looking for a brownie recipe that was new and exciting and different.

I found approximately 297 I wanted to try right then, but instead decided to combine a couple of recipes I found and see how it went.

It went well. Really well. Quite tasty, even.

So here is what I came up with!

Ingredients – minus the powdered sugar because I’m a dork and forget to get it out when I took the photo.

Mix brownies according to package directions and pour half of batter into prepared baking pan.

Combine coconut, cream cheese, sugar and vanilla until well blended.

Spread on top of brownie batter.

Spoon remaining batter on top of coconut and bake until set – about 35 minutes at 350 degrees.

Pour frosting over brownies, top with almonds and enjoy!

Yum!

Coconut Cream Brownies

1 box brownie mix

1 cup sweetened flake coconut

1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup powdered sugar

1 tsp. vanilla

1 can chocolate frosting

sliced almonds

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix brownies according to package directions. Spread half of mix in a greased 8 1/2 x 14 baking pan. Mix coconut, cream cheese, sugar and vanilla until well blended. Spoon over brownie batter. Top with remaining batter and bake at 350 degrees for about 30-35 minutes or until brownie batter is set. Do not over cook. You can take this out just before it seems quiet done and it should be perfect.

Let cool.

Microwave about 1/2 to 2/3 cup of the frosting for 10 seconds and pour over cooled brownies. Top with sliced almonds and serve.

The other evening we had a rain storm that blew past fairly quickly. The sun came out afterword and the sky turned to a lovely shade of blue.

In fact, all the colors in our little corner of outdoor world seemed oddly, and beautifully intensified.

It is usually in moments like these that I forget that I

1. own a camera

2. can make it function

Running into the house, I grabbed the camera and snapped a few shots of my favorite tulips. These gorgeous blooms came from bulbs dragged across the country a hundred years ago by Captain Cavedweller’s great-grandmother.
