If you are hosting Thanksgiving this year and aren’t sure how to set your table, here are some ideas!

You can make the gathering as casual or as elegant as you like, there are no set rules you have to follow. The only rule I enforce is that you have a good time!

Before I share a few ideas, I want to throw out the reminder that the more you prepare before Thanksgiving, the less stress you will endure on Turkey Day. It is true. I honest to goodness would not kid you on something this important! Check out my Countdown to Thanksgiving. Even if you haven’t done a thing yet, you’ve still got time to get caught up and prepared for Thanksgiving guests.

To begin your tablescape design, think about the number of guests you will have attending and how formal the meal will be. Is it a laid-back crowd that would prefer something simple? Are the guests more of a fine-dining group who are comfortable with a formal place setting? Think about these things as you decide how ornate, or simple, to decorate your table.

A very casual Thanksgiving table.

For a casual thanksgiving gathering, you could place a table runner down the center of the table with a few candles, pinecones and nuts as decoration. You could use placemats at each place setting.

For a casual gathering, even your everyday dishes can be made to look special when you layer them and add some fun accents to the table. Think about placing a large pinecone at each place setting and fastening a piece of thin wire around the top. Bend the wire to hold a small placecard. This is a fun way to create a seating arrangement while adding a little pop of fun to each place setting.

A more formal Thanksgiving table.

For a more formal gathering, use a tablecloth. If you are worried about Uncle Fred spilling on your fine linen, use a washable and easy care table covering. If you want to think way outside the box, use a sheet. They come in every color and size, are easy care and if something gets spilled and the stain won’t come out you won’t be devastated at the loss of a $6 sheet versus your grandmother’s antique linen tablecloth.

Haul out your good china or a more formal pattern if you have one. Create a beautiful centerpiece or arrangement. Make sure it is low to the table and not obstructing the view or put it up high enough that guests can see under it. You can do this by using a plant stand or small side table. It adds quite a bit of drama to your table. Make sure you have candles for added warmth. If you have cloth napkins, use them!  If you are using fresh flowers, make sure the smell is not overly strong. It will compete with the smells of your food and can even inhibit the taste. It is also a good idea to steer away from strong floral aromas in case some of your guests have allergies or may be sensitive to the odors.

If you want a table that is more formal than casual but less stuffy than elegant, set your table with a cloth, add in a nice centerpiece but make the place settings a bit more fun. If you have two or three dish patterns that go together (like a cream set and a brown set) mix and match the pieces. This works especially well if you don’t have enough of any one pattern to make it around the table.

However you decide to entertain this Thanksgiving, remember a little preparation goes a long way and that the most important thing is to connect with those who have gathered in your home. And don’t forget to be Thankful!

Vroom, Vroom

Word of the Week: Vroom

vroom

1. the roaring sound made by a motor at high speed.
2. to cause to make such a sound.
He was an expert at making the car vroom.
Hubby’s dad recently purchased a new car. Not just any new car, but a Hemi-Orange Dodge Challenger.  I was a bit dubious about the car at first, not sure if I bought into all the hype around the Challenger. Could it really be as great as all the reports and ads claim it to be?
Absolutely!
After one ride, Hubby and I both picked our jaws off the floorboards and turned green with envy!
Talk about acceleration, exhilaration. This car knows how to get up and go. And Hubby’s dad has a great time making it get up and go. He couldn’t have been any more proud if he had tried. And that is OK – because the car really is sweet.
It is probably a really good thing a car like that is not in our near (or even distant) future because I’m pretty sure one of us, who will remain nameless and blameless, would have a really hard time not getting a speeding ticket.
If you ever get the opportunity to take a spin in one, don’t blink an eye, jump right in and enjoy the ride!
Happy Monday from the Wanna-be Joyrider!

Easy Tater Tot Casserole

In the grand scheme of things, I realize on a scale of one to 10 the healthiness of this casserole is somewhere down in the single digits, but sometimes don’t you just crave some good ol’ delicious comfort food that you know is adding five pounds to your thighs while you eat it?

Well, the craving overtook my better sense the other day and I made Tater Tot Casserole. I think I pilfered this recipe from one of my aunts way back when Hubby and I were in newly wedded bliss, toned and fit. Goodness, but that was a long time ago.

Sorry, I digress.

Anyway, this casserole is super easy to make and so comforting on a cold, blustery day. Add a salad and you’ve got a nice, simple meal.

The ingredients - I think I managed to include them all in the photo this time!

Mix the seasoning, onion flakes, salt and pepper into your ground beef as you brown it.

While you brown the ground beef, put the tater tots in a casserole dish in the oven and start getting them warmed up.

Mix mushroom soup into ground beef. I'm lazy and mix mine right in the skillet.

Sprinkle cheese on top of meat mixture. I realize I did not measure out the cheese and am eyeballing it. It was just the way things were rolling that day.

Gooey cheese, all hot and ready to be devoured.

Ready to eat. Yum!

Tater Tot Casserole

2 pounds of ground beef

1 package of tater tots

1 cup shredded colby-jack cheese (or cheddar)

1/2 tsp onion flakes

2 cans of cream of mushroom soup

all-purpose seasoning

salt and pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Put tater tots into a 9 x 13 casserole pan (I lightly spray mine with PAM first) and place in the oven while you brown the ground beef. I add the onion flakes, seasoning and salt and pepper to the ground beef. When the hamburger is browned, mix it with the two cans of cream of mushroom soup and spoon over the top of the tater tots. Layer on cheese and cover with foil. Bake for about 20 minutes or until soup is hot and bubbly. Remove foil and bake for a few more minutes until cheese is a melted layer of luscious gooey-ness. Remove from oven and serve. I like to sprinkle the top of my casserole with a bit of chopped parsley. Hubby likes his straight up “without any of that weird green stuff on there.”

Happy Entertaining and Enjoy!

Veteran’s Day

A Nation’s Strength

Not gold, but only man can make
A people great and strong;
Men who, for truth and honor’s sake,
Stand fast and suffer long.

Brave men who work while others sleep,
Who dare while others fly —
They build a nation’s pillars deep
And lift them to the sky.

Walt Whitman
