My sister, as a baby.

For many of us, the holiday season is much more than an opportunity to eat too much food, spend too much money and get presents (notice I did not say too many – can there be such a thing?).

The holidays are about the relationships we share with those we love. About the special feelings we keep in our hearts and the individual moments of innate sweetness that we want to remember forever.

The Christmas season always make me think of my sister. She was born with a brain tumor that continued to grow throughout her life. She also had epilepsy and never quite reached mental maturity. Five years ago, she passed away from head trauma resulting from one of her seizures.

She was 14 years old when I was born and really messed up the good thing she had going. She had been the baby of the family for all that time and liked things as they were. Along came this interloper who threw the world as she knew it into a tailspin. To say there was a bit of resentment on her part would be a mild understatement. Most of the time, I think my presence was a constant reminder that her position had been usurped.

But Christmas…Christmas, with its wonderful magical air would sweep over her with a beautiful blanket of peace and goodwill and things would be different. The desire to have fun, to be good because Santa was watching, took over.

My Dad and brothers with my sister - mid 1950s.

She would start making presents for everyone. Under different circumstances, I think she would have been a great artist. She liked to draw cartoons and did a bang up job with it. Her favorite character to draw was Snoopy. She also liked to do stitching. The last Christmas she was really with us, she stitched up two little pictures of dogs (another of her favorite things) and gave one to me and one to Hubby.

Although she wasn’t overly fond of the great outdoors, before Christmas she could be found outside attempting to build a snowman or plotting some way to bombard unsuspecting individuals with snowballs.

She would get involved with things she normally ignored the rest of the year, like baking and decorating. The decorating would nearly throw my Mom into a tailspin sometimes.

I don’t know where it came from but there was a music box – a little golden bird cage with a tiny bird inside that would tweet a holiday tune (which I can’t even remember now). She would dig through the decorations until she found it, the nostalgic aroma of bayberry wafting out of the storage box and filling the room with a scent that forevermore will bring a picture to mind of our family decking the halls, circa 1978. Once found, she would have that bird tweeting over and over until I thought my parents would throw it in a snowbank. As annoying as it was, it wasn’t Christmas until she got that music box out and played it a dozen times.

I’d like the opportunity, just once more, to watch her play that music box, to hear the bird tweet, to see the look of wonder and joy that filled her face each holiday season.

So my wish for you this holiday season is a wish that you cherish every precious moment with those you love and hold dear. Make some beautiful Christmas memories with them this year. Ones that take up a very special little corner in your heart.

With Christmas Love,

Shanna

The party go-ers.

Hubby and I drove four hours one way last weekend so I could attend a Tea Party being held by some of my favorite cousins.

Hubby’s incentive was to escape to one of his favorite stores where he could drool over guns and hunting gear without an uninterested female tagging along asking inane questions or spouting off stupid jokes about the store in general.

We both were quite pleased with the arrangement!

My cousins Twylia, Nancy and Bonnie played host to all the women in the family for an afternoon tea party. It was marvelous. We all converged in Twylia’s new home, which has a fantastic view, and spent two hours chatting, laughing, bonding and catching up with one another.

Then there was the food! Scones, quiche, fresh fruit that was so flavorful, tea sandwiches and decadent desserts as well as some really tasty tea! The table was set beautifully. The three hostesses pulled out their mom’s  china and tea sets. It was so special to use those dishes because it made it seem like a little bit of Aunt Louise was there enjoying the party right along with us.

We all were asked to wear a hat and that in itself was a hoot. Those who didn’t have hats were able to choose one from a vintage collection Nancy borrowed from a friend.

Aunt Robbie

I think my most wonderful Aunt Robbie had the best hat: stylish, sassy, and spunky – just like her.

Nancy and her nieces.

Young and old alike gathered. Nancy is so much fun, even the younger crowd catches her enthusiasm.

Then there were those who just can’t be serious. Ever. These are my kind of people to hang out with!

I really mean ever.

I hope when I am nearing 80 that I have as much fun as Aunt Robbie. She really is an inspiration! And Julie, Sweet Julie, is always loads of fun.

I highly recommend spending time with your favorite group of girls. It really does your heart good. Thank you to all who attended and made the afternoon fun and especially to Twylia, Nancy and Bonnie for hosting!
Your Devoted Tea Drinker,

Shanna

Word of the Week: Vroom

vroom

1. the roaring sound made by a motor at high speed.
2. to cause to make such a sound.
He was an expert at making the car vroom.
Hubby’s dad recently purchased a new car. Not just any new car, but a Hemi-Orange Dodge Challenger.  I was a bit dubious about the car at first, not sure if I bought into all the hype around the Challenger. Could it really be as great as all the reports and ads claim it to be?
Absolutely!
After one ride, Hubby and I both picked our jaws off the floorboards and turned green with envy!
Talk about acceleration, exhilaration. This car knows how to get up and go. And Hubby’s dad has a great time making it get up and go. He couldn’t have been any more proud if he had tried. And that is OK – because the car really is sweet.
It is probably a really good thing a car like that is not in our near (or even distant) future because I’m pretty sure one of us, who will remain nameless and blameless, would have a really hard time not getting a speeding ticket.
If you ever get the opportunity to take a spin in one, don’t blink an eye, jump right in and enjoy the ride!
Happy Monday from the Wanna-be Joyrider!

Almost five years ago, my cousin Brad called and discussed doing something special and fun for his Mom. I was all ears.

Brad is one of those super nice, incredibly sweet all-around great guys that you are thrilled just to know. Add in the fact that his Mom, my wonderful Aunt Robbie, has been like a second Mom to me for my entire life, and I couldn’t refuse whatever it was he was going to ask.

My most wonderful auntie has always been extra special to me. I was born the day after Aunt Robbie’s birthday, we share the same middle name, we both love the color pink and have yet to find a mall we didn’t like.

Aunt Robbie was blessed with two boys, but no girls. So Brad proposed a few of us girl cousins do something fun with Aunt Robbie. We plotted and planned and ended up with four of us girls taking Aunt Robbie for an overnight stay in a cute little town with fun shops, great food and a nice hotel. It was bliss!

My three cousins are daughters of my Dad’s two other sisters, both of whom have passed away. Aunt Robbie became Mom to us all on that trip. With each of us she loves, laughs, cries, teases and counsels – and that just makes us love her all the more.

We had such a great time on that first trip, we decided to make it an annual event. We all look forward to the time we can spend with each other, reconnecting, sharing memories, shopping, eating and enjoying the company. Our little group includes my cousins Julie, Nancy and Twylia – all fun, fantastic women in their own unique way.

So this year when we started planning our “shopping conference” we decided we needed to have a name for our group. Considering that we drive all over the countryside to meet and considering our love to shop, talk, eat and repeat the process until we are all exhausted, we came up with the name of the “Gallivanting Goddesses.”

We met just last week and it was fantastic as always. Aunt Robbie is still running circles around us, still able to hand-out great advice and fashion tips and still the sweet Aunt that we adore.

And these girls just know how to have a great time.

I encourage all you girls to have a group that you go gallivanting with at least once a year. Maybe it is family, maybe it is friends, maybe a combination of both – but you need that girl time.  It does your heart and spirit so much good!

So here’s to future gallivanting!

Just One of the Goddesses,

Shanna
