The other day I inherited a stack of teen magazines that originally belonged to my sister.

flip magazine 1974 october

What makes these unique and oh-so-interesting is that they are from the late 1960s through the mid-1970s.

Tiger Beat October 1975

Some of them look like they probably did the day she got them from the store.

teen life september 1975

Others are missing the covers but the pages are mostly in good shape.

Since most of these magazine were before my time (or when I was young enough my biggest concern was which baby doll to lug around that day and how to get my dad to take me with him irrigating so we could make a candy run to the neighborhood store and Mom would be none the wiser) there were a lot of names and faces I didn’t recognize.

the new seekers

Like the band The New Seekers.

the hudson brothersOr The Hudson Brothers. Member Bill is the father of Kate and Oliver Hudson.

jeff eastI also had no idea who Jeff East was, but apparently he gave a rousing rendition in a 1970s version of Tom Sawyer.

michael gray

Michael Gray played in a TV series called Shazam! (That I also have no recollection of ever seeing.)

One thing I noticed is that the magazines seemed to assume anyone buying them would recognize the people featured because I noticed several times no last names were mentioned and on full-page photos, some had no identifying names at all. While probably cool at the time, not so cool now when you have no idea who these people are – forty years later.

There were also some faces and names I recognized.

donny and marie

Like Donny and Marie. I think they are mentioned in almost every magazine.

robbie benson

And Robbie Benson. How could you not know Robbie Benson? (The theme from Ice Castles is right now playing in my head.)

emergency

Of course there would be Randy and Kev from Emergency! One year for my birthday, I may have been five or six, I got an Emergency fireman’s hat with their pictures on the front. I wanted to be a fireman for Halloween that year but I think I got dressed as a witch or cat or something not nearly as exciting. You know, back in those days, little girls were not firemen, or so my mother said.

vincent

Vincent Van Patten. I’m pretty sure he looked twelve in some of the magazines although the one article claimed he was 16.

GAB001_Shaun_CASSIDY

He and Shaun Cassidy offered their thoughts on “Our Secret Love Tricks – or How we Make Out!” They each talked about different kinds of girls and the “tricks of the trade” they use to attract each different type – like the Shy Type, The Good Looker (that was tops on both their lists), Miss Hard-T0-Get and Ms. Liberated.

I have to admit, I was somewhat surprised and completely entertained by their responses.

Other names that were easy to recognize included Leif Garrett, Alice Cooper, Linda Blair, Susan Dey, Cher, Freddie Prinze and Michael Landon.

Oh, and I can’t forget the advice column on love and relationships from Maureen McCormick  (Marsha Brady).

The fashion columns nearly pushed me into fits of hysterical laughter, so I think I’ll stop for now.

I’m sure I shouldn’t be so thoroughly amused and fascinated with these magazines, but I am. I’ll try and take as good of care of them as my sister did. Who knows, someone twenty or forty years from now might really get a kick out of them.

Sliced BaconI received a catalog in the mail the other day that made me actually burst out laughing.

On the cover was a selection of candles in “man” scents like “Riding Mower,” “First Down,” and, my favorite, “Mmm, Bacon!”

The inside of the catalog had several pages you could scratch-and-sniff, including all their Man Candle pages.

With names like “Man Town” and “Midsummer’s Night” (which, by the way, stinks like High Karate after shave), I couldn’t keep this to myself.

I showed the catalog to Captain Cavedweller who took a sniff or two, turned up his nose and said I should throw the catalog out before it stunk up the whole house.

Packing it to work with me, I took an informal survey of my coworkers (both male and female) and the results came back pretty much the same as CC’s reaction.

One single guy said if he was buying a candle, it would be something a girl would like to impress her, not something that smelled like a bacon.

If you like the smell of fresh cut grass, the Riding Mower candle isn’t bad, but if you’re looking for a great father’s day gift, I’d cross man candles off your potential list.

To finish up my week long Butterfly Party theme kick, here are a few more food ideas.

butterfly fruit salad finished

Butterfly Fruit Salad was super easy to make and looked pretty impressive.

butterfly fruit salad ingredients

Ingredients included watermelon, canteloupe, cherries and blackberries but you could use whatever fruit you have on hand that is in season. You do need melon to do the butterfly cut-outs though.

I peeled the melon and cut it into flat chunks about 1/4 inch thick then pressed in the cookie cutter. The cantaloupe is a little harder to cut, but totally worth the effort.

The melon is easy-breezy to cut into. I used two different sizes of cookie cutters.

And the result was a bowlful of fun butterfly shaped melon.

chocolate butterfly choc in bag

The last and final thing I served at the party was chocolate mousse cups with chocolate butterflies.

I used a mousse mix, but you can certainly make it from scratch of you so desire.

I melted a handful of chocolate chips and then spoon them into a ziploc bag with the corner cut off one end. Make the opening pretty small or you’ll have extra fat butterflies.

Pattern for the chocolate butterflies. Mine is a little freaky, so draw your own if you like.

Place the pattern beneath a piece of parchment on a baking sheet. Using the chocolate, follow the lines of the pattern (or free-handing if you are talented like that. Sadly, I’m not.)

Freeze until firm (you can make these days ahead of time, if you like. Just don’t touch them any more than you have to. They are fragile and melt in no time flat.

When you are ready to serve. Add a dollop of whipped cream to the mousse, remove the butterflies from the freezer then nestle into the whipped cream. A fun, whimsical way to end a party!

butterfly cookie white sparkle

Sticking to the Butterfly Party theme I began earlier this week, here are some food ideas I used for my party.

I’ll start with the sweet stuff and then get to the healthier options.

Use a basic sugar cookie dough,  from a package or homemade although I love this cookie recipe, and roll the dough about 1/3 an inch thick. Cut with butterfly shaped cookie cutters and bake until set but not quite done.

butterfly cookie frosting

Remove from oven and let cool completely then frost with a simple buttercream frosting.

butterfly cookie decor

Then you get to have fun decorating the cookies. Here are some of the things I used to bedazzle the cookies. If you haven’t tried it yet, the Color Mist spray from Wilson is like edible spray paint. It’s fabulous.

You can add whatever embellishments you like. I would have liked mine better if 1. I hadn’t been in such a hurry and 2. If my kitchen hadn’t been so hot. The frosting was melting faster than I could blink.

buttefly veggies lettuceI also attempted to make a butterfly veggie plate. You basically use leaf lettuce for the foundation and add whatever veggies you like in hopes it looks like a butterfly.

Someone with artistic talent would probably have much better luck than I did with this.

However, my guests were kind and pretended they could make this look like a butterfly. I, however, could not.

butterfly pasta with cheese

I also made a pasta salad using butterfly shaped pasta. Sorry, I forgot to take a photo of just the pasta. But the salad recipe is simple.

Pasta (cooked, drained and cooled)

Feta Cheese (1 cup)

Parmesan Cheese (1/4 cup)

Olives (I used a mix of black, manzanilla and Kalamata) (about 2/3 cup)

Caesar Vinaigrette Dressing (about 1 cup)

Mix and let sit overnight in your fridge before serving.

It is super easy to make but looks and tastes like you’ve gone to a lot of work.

butterfly sandwich cut out bread

Our main dish was butterfly sandwiches (glamorous, I know!).

I used some old-fashioned white bread and a butterfly cookie cutter to cut out the pieces, then allowed the guests to put whatever they wanted on their sandwiches (assortment of meats and cheeses).

And when they were done, they looked like this.

Tomorrow I’ll share a few more food ideas for hosting a fun butterfly themed party.
