I learned some things this weekend I feel compelled to share with you today. I’m sure you’ll be thrilled!

1. Rice Krispies Treats can be fashioned into a variety of interesting shapes, including a three-tiered cake.

2. Fruit Roll-Ups can be fashioned into ribbons, bows and rosettes.

3. When you have greasy fingers from Rice Krispies Treats, do not attempt to do anything with Fruit Roll-Ups other than eat them.

4. Rain storms wait for no man – or bridal shower. Approximately 3.2 minutes after everyone is settled outside to enjoy the celebration to honor the bride-to-be, the skies will open up and pour down buckets of rain, effectively putting a damper on things. Or at least dampening things… and people… and gifts… and food. You get the idea.

5. Approximately 3.2 minutes after you get home from said shower, soggy and cold, the sun will come out and it will feel like summer outside.

6. A little rain can’t stop true love. (Congrats Erik and Katie!)

7. If it even remotely looks like it might be raining while we are out after dark, Captain Cavedweller thinks I should serve as his personal chauffeur.

Last fall, Captain Cavedweller bought me several lily bulbs. We dug holes and planted them and then I promptly forgot about their existence.

With my backyard a barren wasteland, I’ve sort of tuned out all things growing around my house until we can get everything whipped back into shape.

But the other day I happened to glance into the front flower bed and came to an abrupt halt. It’s where the lilies bloomed. In profusion. In lovely, stately shades of color. In splendor, despite the month-long disruption by back hoes and dirt and trucks full of gravel.

They bloomed.

They thrived.

They reminded me that a little thing like our backyard disaster doesn’t mean the world stops spinning. Life continues and so does the growing season.

They reminded me to slow down and take notice of the beauty around me. To make time to enjoy the little miracles that blossom daily if I just open my eyes to see them.

And to thank Captain Cavedweller for bringing so many wonderful things into my life. Like a  lovely and unexpected lily’s bloom.

Last week I accomplished something that I was quite excited about and proud of.

For some people, what I did would have been nothing of importance. For other people it would have been a huge deal.

For me,  it was one of those things that confirms that following my heart and my dreams is the right and good thing to do.

Only some of the Negative Nellie’s in my world made comments like:

“Oh, sorry you didn’t do better than that.”

“Well, I suppose that’s better than nothing.”

“When you move on to something else, it won’t really matter.”

I know I should ignore them. I know their thoughtless comments shouldn’t bother me.

But they do.

I’m only human after all.

And no matter how thick I try to grow my skin, there are still some things that worm their way through that protective coating and zap me. They take away the joy of achievement, diminish the excitement of my accomplishment, and they hurt my feelings.

So after having shared with Captain Cavedweller some of the things two of the Nellie’s in my world said, he gave me the “why do you listen to them at all” look, hugged me and told me they aren’t worth wasting my effort worrying about.

The next morning, he sent me these at work:

Along with a note that let me know how proud he is of what I accomplished.

He’s good like that – at building me up when others try to push me down.

We all need a champion in our corner. I’m certainly glad I’ve got CC in mine.

Captain Cavedweller’s wonderful mother came for the weekend.

Our way of celebrating Mother’s Day is for the two of us to go to a shooting class the local gun club puts on through the NRA.

No tea parties with big hats and buttery scones for the two of us.

Nope.

We have semi-automatic weapons, the smell of gun powder and the need to blast bullets into a tiny little target.

Last year was the first year we took the Women on Target class and Cherry, CC’s mom, loved it so much I asked her if she wanted to do it again this year. She enthusiastically replied yes.

So she drove several hours just to spend the weekend with us.  CC was working Saturday which left us girls to go to the class and hang out all day. It was awesome.

Getting up bright and early, we both were excited about going to the class where we got to shoot no less than 20 different types of guns.

After shooting one 22 rifle, Cherry decided she was going home and buying one. She loved it.

My favorite part is the shotgun area where we got to blast clay pigeons out of the air. I really want my own shotgun and the ability to shoot these in my backyard. Yep. That’s what I’m holding out for.

Whether you like guns, fears guns or don’t know a thing about guns, I highly recommend this class for any woman. It’s a great time of sisterhood as well as a fantastic way to learn about guns, safe handling and just have some good old-fashioned fun.

Thanks to our local gun club for sponsoring the event and making us all feel so welcome!
