The other evening we had a rain storm that blew past fairly quickly. The sun came out afterword and the sky turned to a lovely shade of blue.

In fact, all the colors in our little corner of outdoor world seemed oddly, and beautifully intensified.

It is usually in moments like these that I forget that I

1. own a camera

2. can make it function

Running into the house, I grabbed the camera and snapped a few shots of my favorite tulips. These gorgeous blooms came from bulbs dragged across the country a hundred years ago by Captain Cavedweller’s great-grandmother.

Last year I wrote all about the Blooms of Death that invade my backyard around this time of the flower blooming season.

Well, the wretched things are back and in full bloom.

It is my opinion that they are:

1. obscene

2. disgusting

3. smelly behind anything imaginable. If you’ve ever smelled a dead rodent imagine multiplying that smell times 100 and having it waft in your open windows.

Captain Cavedweller, on the other hand, thinks they are fantastic. Of course he would.

If you’ve read my blog at all you have probably gathered from my ramblings that I like roses.

A lot.

As in they bring me ridiculous amounts of joy. They make me smile. They draw me into a wistful state and leave me floating in  blissful summer dreams.

We’ve had not only an unseasonable amount of cool weather but also some vicious wind that wreaked havoc on my poor roses.

Entire branches were broken off, poor little buds were beaten without mercy and I’m not convinced the two escaped convicts (aka the neighbor dogs) didn’t use them as some sort of sadistic demolition course.

I was surprised when I went out and found several roses blossoming despite all the challenges they’ve faced this spring.

Unable to stop myself, I cut a bouquet and brought it in the house where the scent led me into a somewhat euphoric state that Captain Cavedweller had to push me out of – at least long enough to make his dinner.

When I first ventured with Captain Cavedweller out to the farm where his grandparents lived, his grandmother had the most lovely tulips blooming by her door. They were beautiful shades of pink – hot pink, pale pink, pink with stripes. Goodness, but they were just breathtaking.

A few years later when his grandparents were packing up to leave the farm, I asked if I could have a few of the bulbs. That was when I discovered that the original tulip bulbs came from Captain Cavedweller’s great-grandmother, which made them even more special.

Not wanting them to get lost or mixed in with my flower garden mess, I bought a gargantuan planter and buried them there. They bloomed in it for a few years until we moved and finally settled into the home we have now. One of the first things I did that fall was dig up a flower bed and plant the tulip bulbs there.

Over the years they have multiplied into a beautiful array of dazzling blooms.

And as crazy as it might sound, I somehow feel like I have a little connection to his grandma and great-grandmother through these awesome blooms.

That, and they are just so doggone pretty!
