A couple weeks ago, Captain Cavedweller and I took a week of escape and ventured to a bigger city where there are all kinds of fabulous wonders like shopping malls, IMAX theaters, unlimited dining options, zoos, botanical gardens and did I mention shopping malls?

One day, we wandered through a lovely rose garden and, making CC pack my camera for me wherever we went, I snapped a few shots.

The garden welcomes visitors with this wonderful statue of the woman the rose garden is named after.

I don’t know why, but the fountain with the bright blue water fascinated me more than it probably should have.

It really is a lovely and well-kept rose garden with fun walkways and interesting landscape elements.

And the roses…

were absolutely…

gorgeous!

Cosmos…

So bright…

So cheery…

So perfectly summery against a brilliant blue sky.

Last fall, Captain Cavedweller bought me several lily bulbs. We dug holes and planted them and then I promptly forgot about their existence.

With my backyard a barren wasteland, I’ve sort of tuned out all things growing around my house until we can get everything whipped back into shape.

But the other day I happened to glance into the front flower bed and came to an abrupt halt. It’s where the lilies bloomed. In profusion. In lovely, stately shades of color. In splendor, despite the month-long disruption by back hoes and dirt and trucks full of gravel.

They bloomed.

They thrived.

They reminded me that a little thing like our backyard disaster doesn’t mean the world stops spinning. Life continues and so does the growing season.

They reminded me to slow down and take notice of the beauty around me. To make time to enjoy the little miracles that blossom daily if I just open my eyes to see them.

And to thank Captain Cavedweller for bringing so many wonderful things into my life. Like a  lovely and unexpected lily’s bloom.

Saturday, Captain Cavedweller and I did something I promised I’d never do again – held a yard sale.

I hate them. Loathe them. Have nightmares about them.

But due to the backyard project that I’ll blog about soon, we had to tear down one of our storage sheds and we have 18 years of useless treasures that needed to be sorted through and disposed of.

A yard sale seemed like the best way to make a dent in all that…. stuff disappearing.

So while CC made breakfast and then lunch, I sat outside and waited for shoppers, read a book, got really sunburned and reminded myself to never again hold another yard sale.

We live out in the country. We don’t get a  lot of drive-by traffic. And for whatever reason, I could not convince CC to go stand down at the corner of the highway and hold a big sign advertising our sale. What’s up with that, anyway.

So while I sat pouting and burning my fair skin to a crisp, CC pointed out a lovely butterfly who seemed to be quite taken with our blooming pinks. I ran in the house and grabbed my camera, attempting for about twenty minutes to get a shot of it not moving.

Finally, it held mostly still.

I can relate to that butterfly. Sometimes I flit around, don’t want bothered, just want to do my thing.

But I’m really glad it settled down long enough to snap a quick photo!
