Meet Arlan and Alex

Excerpt:

Entranced by the way her mouth moved as she spoke, Arlan didn’t realize he leaned closer and closer until Alex stopped talking and released a sigh.

“Arlan, don’t you think…”

“Yes, I do.” He set down his coffee cup and rose to his feet, pulling Alex up next to him. Gently tracing his thumb across her bottom lip, he watched her eyes flutter closed and listened to her draw in a ragged breath.

“Alex, please, may I kiss you?” Arlan thought he’d die if she said no. Every nerve, every muscle, every ounce of blood pumping rapidly through his veins wanted to taste her lips, savor their velvety softness moving against his own.

“Arlan…” Alex raised her gaze to his. The wanting in her eyes was undeniable, but she stepped back from him. “As much as I want to say yes, I have to say no. I refuse to come between you and Miss Bevins. It wouldn’t be right or fair.”

“There is no me and Miss Bevins. In fact, I wrote her a letter today making that point abundantly clear.” Arlan moved until he stood with the toes of his boots disappearing beneath the hem of Alex’s skirt.

“But I’ve heard you whispering her name over and over, like a chant or something. I know you love her, Arlan, and I won’t do this.” Alex backed up until she bumped into the wall.

Arlan wasted no time in closing the space between them. He raised his hand to her face again, trailing his index finger across her smooth cheek and along her jaw. “If you heard me whispering her name, it was in a futile effort to remind myself of her. You see, I tend to forget she even exists whenever I think of you.”

As a Father’s Day surprise for my dad, I decided to write down a collection of humorous stories based on events from my childhood on the farm.

Excerpt:

“Let’s see you whip Rocket into shape,” Hayes said, stepping back and nodding his head to Hank.
Hank pulled his hat down on his head, tugged on his gloves, and gave one last look around, like he hoped divine intervention would keep him from riding to his death.
Motioning for Marcy to keep the kids at a safe distance away, Hayes waited until Hank had his left foot in the stirrup and was swinging his right leg over the back of the horse before he gave Rocket a firm smack on the hindquarters.
The show the horse and rider put on for eager spectators could have packed a full house. Although completely unrehearsed and not choreographed in any way, the intricate steps and mind-blowing moves were previously unseen in our hemisphere and most likely won’t be again.
Rocket, who appeared to have every intention of living up to his name, shot straight up in the air so high, our heads craned back to keep from missing any of the spectacular exhibition.
On his way back down to earth, the horse went through a series of dance moves that included the foxtrot, tango, and the hokey-pokey.

Meet Lars and Marnie

Excerpt:

“Look, sugar, you know how much I enjoy being with you, but we need to stop this before… well, we just need to stop it.” Marnie turned her back to Lars because it was too hard to see the surprise and hurt on his face at her words.

She’d encouraged him to be friends but she knew she needed to keep him at a distance. Her dream of experiencing a happy future with him was just that – a dream. The more time she spent with him, the harder it was going to be when he came to his senses and set his attention on some decent girl worthy of his love.

“Stop what?” Lars got to his feet and stepped behind Marnie, placing his hands on her shoulders, pulling her back against him. He breathed in her fresh, clean scent, not yet marred by the cloying perfume she wore when she was working. His breath stirred the tendrils of hair escaping the confines of the hairpins holding her tresses on top of her head. Sliding his hands down her arms, he wrapped them around her waist and allowed himself the luxury of holding her close.

“This,” Marnie whispered, her voice laced with misery as her legs began to tremble. She’d never, in her life, felt so cherished and cared for as she did at that moment with the arms of the man she loved holding her close.

“What if I don’t want to stop this? What if I want more than this?” Lars leaned down so his warm breath blew across her neck below her ear. He felt the tremor that passed over her as she closed her eyes, fighting against the emotions he knew he stirred in her.

“Lars,” she croaked, her voice laden with pain. “Don’t. Please don’t.”

“Don’t what? Hold you? Let you know I care about you? Kiss you?”

He turned her around and pushed up her chin until she met his gaze. Her stormy blue eyes raged with an inner battle as he drew a finger along her jaw and across her chin before tracing the outline of her mouth.

When her lips parted slightly, Lars knew he was so far gone for the woman, there was no point of return. Blocking out thoughts of her profession, how wrong it should feel to have such an intense affection for her, he succumbed to his need to taste her, to hold her.

50Dates-Free-promo

I am super excited to announce that Fifty Dates with Captain Cavedweller is available for FREE (that’s right FREE) today through Sunday for Kindle downloads!

Get your copy and enjoy a few laughs today!

And if you already have a copy, let your friends know to download it while it’s free!

50 Dates cover

If you’ve ever been in a relationship for a while you know how easy it is to get into a rut, to put off making special time for each other and fall into the doldrums. My beloved Captain Cavedweller and I found ourselves (okay, it was mostly me) in that same boring boat and decided to do something about. We agreed to spend a year putting a little zippety-zing back into our marriage through weekly dates. As the subtitle implies, I kept a journal of each date, writing down my thoughts and feelings of each experience. Some weeks were exciting and wildly romantic. Others… well, let’s just say not every week we put our best foot forward.

Here’s the official blurb from Amazon:

“What happens when a hopeless romantic with a bit of a sarcastic attitude falls in love with an introvert who dreams of living in a man cave?

They wed, of course – and plan to live happily ever after. The only problem is that life seems to get in the way.

Waking up one day to discover they’d gone from perpetual honeymooners to a boring, predictable couple, Shanna Hatfield and her beloved husband, Captain Cavedweller, set out on a yearlong adventure to add a little zing to their relationship.

This G-rated journey through fifty of their dates provides an insightful, humorous look at the effort they made to infuse their marriage with laughter, love, and gratitude while reconnecting on a new, heartfelt level. “

And here’s a little excerpt:

Date Eight

Blown Away

There are a few things that Captain Cavedweller gets really, really excited about.
One of them is football.
From magazines talking about football to watching games on television to attending local high school games, he can’t get enough. He’s even been known to sit and watch reruns of football games if he happens to find one airing in the summer months.
Because of his football obsession, for his birthday I purchased season tickets to the arena football games that take place an hour away.
Today’s big date, hosted by CC, was to drive to the city to pick up the tickets, visit a couple of car dealerships since we are hunting for a new vehicle, and then take me out to eat.
Picking up the tickets was fun. The team members were so gracious and friendly and let those attending know they truly appreciate the support of the game.
Car shopping also went pretty well considering we never saw a single car salesman. Generally, we can barely get out of the car before one swoops in, trying to talk us into vehicles you would never see me ride in dead or alive.
Apparently, the forty-mile-an-hour winds coupled with frigid temperatures kept them inside the showroom where it was warm and toasty, and their hair wouldn’t turn into a wild snarled mess, resembling something created by Medusa’s own hairdresser.
Once I started crying and begging for mercy from the wind (okay, I wasn’t crying, but the wind did make my eyes water. A lot.), CC offered to take me to the mall. I was not in a shopping mood at this point, much more interested in sitting down somewhere warm.
Since it was late afternoon and we still hadn’t eaten lunch, we went to a barbecue restaurant. That would be my first pick once in a blue moon. However, the moon was not blue that day…

And a few words of praise from Reviewers:

“For those of you who have read books by Shanna know that she is a hopeless romantic in her writing. This book is a true peek at the hopeless romantic in her everyday life. How many times do we as readers get to know our authors up close and personal? Oh, and you can’t make this stuff up! Cute and funny, this is an endearing offering of romantic endeavors of two people very much in love! Dinner and a movie aside, some adorable ideas for memorable date nights. Thank you, Shanna for allowing us to intrude into your heartfelt love for your Cavedweller!”

Amazon Reviewer

“This is a great fun read…that gives you so many ideas for easy, fun and romantic date nights! If you want a good clean read and want to know more about Shanna and her “Captain” this is a great way to get to know them! I would recommend this book for anyone who is looking quick, easy and affordable date night ideas to keep any relationship spontaneous and fun!”

Amazon Reviewer

“This book has inspired me to try planning some of the date nights mentioned in the book. How fun to bring back some of the romance, to a marriage where the day to day living tends to get you in a rut. The fact that this was a joint effort and garnered surprising dates, shows how you need to put a little effort into bringing back the romance. Trying new things and planning surprises. Way to go Shanna, you have done it again. Stepping outside your comfort zone and doing something your mate is passionate about reinforces that marriage is a “give and take” process.”
