Because it is raining, the skies and gray and dreary, and I still haven’t recuperated from my time-change trauma, I am being a lazy slug today and giving you some links to previous spring posts. Enjoy!

Do you ever get asked that question?

“What’s for dinner?”

“What are we eating tonight?”

“I’m starving, what are you making?”

That’s when I may or may not sometimes get a bit ornery and reply with “I don’t know, what are YOU making?”

But if you aren’t like me and you have little people in your house who are truly eager to know what they will soon be eating, one fun way to keep them in the know is with a chalkboard or memo board.

If you plan out your menu a week at a time, this is an especially helpful tool.

You can write on the board the day of the week and what meal is planned, that way everyone knows what to expect. You could also have some fun with it and write a big question mark and ask for volunteers to prepare the meal. You might be surprised what budding young chefs can come up with.

A memo board is also a great tool to have for parties. Whether you are having a more formal affair or a casual gathering, your guests appreciate knowing what they are eating. Some of them might even start drooling once they see what will soon be on their plates, tantalizing their tastebuds.

You can find chalkboards at office supply and craft supply stores or chalkboard paint at any home supply store. You can also find memo boards here.

Happy Entertaining!

Just the other day I was flipping through the pile of junk mail that arrived at home and what should I come across but one of my favorite home catalogs. It is filled with beautiful bedding ensembles, breezy curtains, lovely linens.

And then… right there… in the smack-dab middle of the catalog was a section of weight loss equipment and tools.

I couldn’t get over the shock of seeing all the chrome and black equipment in the midst of the charming home decor. Seriously, it just doesn’t work. Doesn’t make sense. Has the whole world gone mad?

There was one entire section devoted to home scales. That had me laughing, I have to tell you.

The first one to make me giggle was a talking scale with a 440 pound capacity. I can only imagine the conversations I’d have with it.

“Hello, Scale, tell me something great today.”

“Sure, fatso, step right up.”

Yep, I do not need a sassy backtalking scale. I’ve already got a GPS system for that.

The next scale that was a bit much was one that had a 550 pound capacity and projected your weight in bright red laser numbers on the wall – no bending to read the number required. Are people insane? Who wants their weight number broadcast in 6 inch bright red illuminated numbers on the wall for any and all to see?

There was the scale that looked more like  a slab of home siding that featured a hand-held LCD display. You step on the slab and hold the reader in your hand. That would be a great place for it to be. It makes throwing it across the room so much easier when you don’t like what it had to say.

The final scale that I found utterly ridiculous was one that had a 1,000 pound capacity. It looked like a platform for parking small vehicles or large bovine. If you want to run your kid’s 4-h Steer project across it for a quick weight check, no problem!

I think I’ll stick with my plain ol’ non-digital scale that is buried somewhere in the garage, deep enough that I’m not tempted to go dig it out at all.

Now if someone could invent a scale that would permanently stay on your ideal weight and would magically suck off the pounds until you actually hit it, I could go for that!

Happy Tuesday!

Traditional Green Wreath

Yesterday’s blog was about welcome mats and how they set the tone of greeting for your holiday guests. Another way to say welcome at your door without saying a word is a wreath. These come in literally all shapes, sizes and colors, so find something that matches your unique personality, your home, or the type of welcome you want to extend.

My recommendation is to have fun with this!

If you don’t have a wreath hanger on your door, you can buy inexpensive hangers that hook over the top of your door.  Just make sure your door will close with one on. I like the metal hangers because they are relatively flat and work with most doors.

Traditioanl Fresh Green Wreath with Berries

This time of year a lot of service organizations and clubs also sell fresh green wreaths to raise funds. You can get a very nice wreath and contribute to a good cause at the same time.

Boxwood Wreath

Boxwood Wreaths are fun and can come in some interesting shapes and styles. The greens are always vibrant and look great with nothing more than a simple red or plaid bow.

Cedar Wreath

Cedar Wreaths are another fun, fresh alternative that runs toward the classic holiday look. The best thing about these wreaths are the fragrance. If you’ve never smelled fresh cedar – you must sniff some this holiday season. It is divine.

If you are concerned about getting sap on your door, I’d steer away from fresh greens and go toward something a bit more out-of-the-box.

Pinecone Wreath

A pinecone wreath is a fun, woodsy way to say welcome. Just gather an assortment of pinecones and glue to a styrofoam form or wire to a wire form. You can get creative and add in different accents like nuts, twigs, cinnamon sticks, etc. If you wanted to stretch your effort to last a bit longer, you could use this wreath for Thanksgiving and right on through the holiday season.

Red Berry Wreath

Red Berry Wreaths are guaranteed to grab some attention with their bright red pop of color. You can purchase these wreaths pre-made or make one yourself by hot-gluing berries onto a grapevine or evergreen wreath form.

Candy Wreath

Candy wreaths are super easy (just time consuming) and make a whimsical splash at your entry. Don’t be surprised if you find a few missing as people pass by and can’t stop themselves from grabbing one. You simply hot glue the candy onto a styrofoam wreath form and finish with a bow.

My niece and I decided to make one years ago. After multiple burns, much grumbling, several pieces of eaten candy and possibly a few tears along with an annoying whiny-pants who kept asking “can’t we quit now?” she finished up the wreath while I ate another piece of candy and we hung it on the front door. Neither one of us has been up to the challenge of repeating the process. But it did look great!

Traditional Green Wreath

I think my favorite wreath, though, is one of traditional mixed greens finished with a plaid bow. Boring? Maybe. But to me that circle of green with the bright plaid bow says “holidays” like few things can.

You can decorate your wreaths as elaborate or as plain as you like. Most wreaths look nice finished with a bow – how much easier can it be than that?

So go hang a wreath, pat yourself on the back for adding some holiday cheer outside your door and go eat a sugar cookie for me.

Happy Holiday Entertaining!
