Thanks to a bizarre conversation I had recently with someone that made me feel trapped in a 1953 house-wife’s body, I started thinking about a 1950s themed dinner party.

Just for fun, I posted a question on Facebook Saturday asking what foods people would serve.

The responses were so fun. I loved them all.

So I am definitely toying with the idea of throwing a 1950s themed dinner party. When said event happens, I’ll take a ton of photos and share recipes.

For now, I’ll share some of the menu ideas from facebook:

Pot roast surrounded by potatoes & carrots

Jello salad, Jello Mold, Jello with fruit & cottage cheese (most definitely need Jello)

Iceberg lettuce with Thousand Island dressing

Tuna casserole

Green bean casserole

Crown roast

Fondue

Spam

Canned Vienna Sausages in BBQ Sauce

Deviled eggs, deviled eggs and more deviled eggs

Pimento cheese stuffed celery

Swiss steak

Chicken pot pie

Baked Alaska

Sherbet

Rack of lamb

Dinner rolls

Peach cobbler and ice cream

Cocktail meatballs with sauce

Pigs in a blanket

Meat loaf with mushroom gravy

Cherry pie ala mode

Milk Shakes

Lima beans and square carrots

Chicken a la king

Everything seems a little gray and dreary in my world today, so I thought I’d share something that would brighten things up a bit – the “it” colors for Spring 2012!

I’m kind of excited about the color choices, because I actually like quite a few of them. While I’m not too excited about the Tangerine, Solar Power or Starfish for apparel options, they would make fun party colors!

Bellflower, Margarita and Sweet Lilac and colors I can definitely see doing some fun things with along with Driftwood. I have a friend who will look absolutely gorgeous in Cockatoo, my two personal favorites on this chart of Caberet and Sodalite Blue. Both of those colors speak to me, quite loudly in fact. I may even be wearing something Caberet colored right at this very moment.

I love that these colors seem cheery and bright, but still have some warmth and depth to them.

If you are looking for a reason or theme to host a party, why not have a spring colors party and invite over a few friends. Maybe each one of them could either wear or bring something (food dish, serving piece) in one of the colors.

You could talk about ways to combine colors, what options would make key wardrobe pieces for spring. You might also see who looks best in what colors. There is nothing like a gathering of girlfriends telling you you look fantastic in a certain color to make the world seem a little more sparkly and wonderful.

After just one week of snow, ice, freezing rain and bitter cold, I’m all done with winter.

All. Done.

I don’t know about you, but a tropical escape sounds perfectly wonderful. Warm breezes, sunshine, blue water.

If you are like me with no hope of tropical escape in the forseeable future, bring the fun to your home with a Tropical Escape themed party.

Invitations

Send a simple invitation using some bright flowered paper or cardstock. If you can find something with a Hawaiian theme, even better.  Encourage guests to wear Hawaiian shirts or flowered dresses to fit in with the theme. Flip flops are a must.

Set The Scene

You don’t need to spend a fortune on decorations. Keep it simple and use things like pineapples and coconuts to decorate the tables. You can cut a coconut in half and nestle candles inside or leave whole and pile beside pineapples for a fun centerpiece.

Turn the heat up so your house is warm and has a more tropical feel. Having to huddle near the fireplace doesn’t exactly say warm and tropical.

Silk leis, grass skirts, raffia table skirts and other fun items can be found inexpensively at party stores or online. One source I use is Oriental Trading  for inexpensive party supplies. They have oodles of luau items available.

You could also use seashells for decorations. Fill canning jars with sand and top with a votive.

Make sure each guest receives a lei to wear upon arrival as well as a big “Aloha!”

Fun and Games

Hawaiian music playing in the background is a must. Whether you choose “Tiny Bubbles” or maybe Elvis’  “Blue Hawaii” there is a good list of music available here.

Encourage a hula contest or get everyone going with the Limbo. Here are a few more game ideas.

Have a flip-flop contest with prizes for the cutest, ugliest, most creative, etc.

Give each guest a tiny box of chocolate covered macadamia nuts as a take away from the party.

Food

You can have a fairly simple menu with kalua pork, sweet potatoes, tropical fruit and don’t forget the shaved ice!

To make the pork you’ll need:

pork butt

liquid smoke

salt

Preheat your oven to 325°F. Score the fat of the port butt into 1-inch squares and rub with  salt. Sprinkle liquid smoke lightly over all sides of the meat and into the fat. Wrap securely in tin foil and bake in oven for at least 4 hours. Shred the meat and serve. You can add sweet potatoes to the oven 1 1/2 hours before the meat will be done.

Have fun with this party theme and see if it doesn’t chase away the winter blahs.

We woke up to a fresh layer of snow yesterday morning.

It is approximately the second time this winter we’ve had snow. By late afternoon, it was mostly melted off.  I secretly did a little dance of joy because I hate driving in the snow. If I could sit home, curled up by the fire and watch the winter wonderland from inside the house, it would be awesome.

Slipping and sliding my way into work gives it a whole different and much unappreciated meaning.

While I was carefully driving to work yesterday, I was thinking about winter party themes. You could have a lot of fun with the whole snow theme in general, but here are a few ideas.

• Snowflakes – use them in everything from your invitation to your decorations. You could even use them as stencils to decorate brownies with powdered sugar.

• Snowball – use shaved ice as “snow” for some fun beverages. Make mounds of “snow” out of cotton batting for decorations and have “snowballs” made from styrofoam balls. Serve foods that go with the snowball theme (like meatballs in a white sauce, round bread rolls and vanilla ice cream rolled in coconut for dessert).

• Mittens- have a mitten contest, passing out prizes for the ugliest, prettiest, strangest, etc. Play games making people wear their mittens to play (like trying to unwrap and eat a piece of candy, etc.)

• Winter Elegance – go all white or cream. Use white on white decorations, white table coverings, white dishes. Encourage guests to dress in white. (I really think this could be a beautiful party).

• Outdoor fun – have a sledding, ice skating, or skiing party. If you have a place for a bonfire outside, great. If not, bring the fun indoors with treats like S’mores and roasted hotdogs.

There are a few ideas to get you going.
