Thirty plus years ago my parents built a house, the one where they currently reside, and moved from the little house that was originally on The Farm. I lived in what was dubbed The Old House for the first few years of my existence. Sadly enough, the only photo I have in my possession of The Old House is the one above. (Yes, I am the one on the pony. If I remember correctly we called it Blue and that is most likely my sister-in-law hiding behind the pony. I would know more detail but I was 3 at the time.) You can see the front of the house in the photo. Note the steps out front.

About a year ago, my nephew, who now owns The Farm, started tearing down The Old House. It had passed derelict status a long time ago and progressed to a hazard. In the fall, the house went from standing upright to having the walls caved in and the roof on the ground. At the far right of the photo you can see the front steps.

Saturday night, because all the family was gathered and we didn’t have anything better to do, Matt decided to burn the house. It was quite a finale to the evening, I must say.

After pouring a little fuel on the dry wood, Matt lit the fire and we all stood around watching and waiting.

It didn’t take long for the fire to start spreading.

The flames were really hopping on this side of the house.

In no time at all, the entire structure was on fire. A few of us watched completely intrigued by the fire whirls. It was at this point my young niece Katie decided we needed to find some marshmallows to roast. We finally convinced her they would be melted before they ever got toasted. Not to mention none of us wanted to get any closer to the fire.

Here you can really see one shooting up in the midst of the fire. The fire whirls are basically ascending currents of air, like a dust devil except with fire. We think the combination of extreme heat (because believe me it was really, really hot) and the fire burning together from two opposing corners caused the velocity to start the whirls. As they burned up and out, little dust devils swirled around the surrounding area. Sorry, it was too dark to get photos of the swirling dust and to be quiet honest, the swirling flames were much more interesting!

You can see here the big plumes of black smoke are gone and the flames are burning really hot as it gets down to embers. This was about the time one of the neighbors came over to see if we were trying to burn down the world or just a small portion of it.

And here are the blazing hot embers at the end of the fire. I should have gone back the next morning to take photos of the ashes, but it just seemed better to stop here.

Easter Egg Chick - Simple and So Cute!

I came across this recipe the other day and said “I can make that!” Not only was it super cute and simple, it fit into my very limited time schedule. Hooray.

So if I can make these, you can too. Or have your kids jump in and join in the fun!

Ingredients

Cut a zig zag pattern about a third of the way down. Blame the fuzzy photo on Captain Cavedweller, please.

Separate the top from the bottom.

Carefully remove the yolk. If you aren't careful, you'll end up with a mangled egg that looks like a fox has been in the henhouse. And you really don't want that. Nope. Not at all.

Mix up your filling.

Fill the bottom of the egg.

Ready for the top and the finishing touches.

Cute Little Egg Chick

Egg Chicks

12 hard-cooked eggs

1/2 cup mayonnaise (do not use salad dressing, repeat – do not use salad dressing)

1/4 cup Ranch dressing

1/2 teaspoon salt

3 stuffed olives

Peel eggs then cut a thin slice from the bottom of each one so it will stand upright. Cut a zigzag pattern about a third of the way down from the top of each egg. Carefully remove yolks. If you do not carefully remove yolks, your egg will appear mangled like mine. Please, don’t be like me.

Mash yolks in a bowl and add mayo, Ranch dressing and salt. Spoon into bottoms of egg, replace tops.

Cut olives into thin slices for eyes and use pimento pieces for beaks. Gently press into filling. Chill until ready to serve.

Enjoy!

Happy Easter Entertaining!

Planning an Easter Egg Hunt Party can be a fun excuse to gather family and friends together for a casual get-together. Here are some unique ideas to make your party memorable.

•Make it an evening affair with adults. Try Easter Egg hunting in the dark and gather some fun prizes for unique awards like the most broken eggs, least number collected, etc.

•Ask everyone to bring their own basket so you won’t have to go to the expense of purchasing one for all attendees. Tell them to dress them up and have a best basket contest with  a prize.

•Keep the event casual by serving a buffet-style meal. If you do it in the morning offer a brunch, afternoon and evening offer easy finger foods like deviled eggs, pitas, fruit kabobs.

•Keep decorations simple with a vase full of tulips and glass bowls filled with jelly beans. Try making jelly bean centerpieces for a fun touch.

•Use plastic eggs if you are hunting so you don’t have to worry about food safety. This also gives you the opportunity to hide goodies in the eggs like candy, notes, dollar bills or other prizes. If you are filling the eggs for kids, go to the dollar store and get some stickers, jacks or other little toys.

Enjoy and celebrate safely!

Sorry for my lack of detailed photos today. I could give you 17 excuses why I don’t have any, but we’ll just go with the fact that it has been a bit of a crazy week so far.

Today, I wanted to share with you a fun and simple idea for Easter entertaining.

If you have no talent for arranging flowers or want something different as a centerpiece, find three or five wide mouth jars or vases (you can use however many you like, but keep the number odd).

Put a glass votive holder in each vase and put an unscented votive candle inside. Pour jelly beans all ready the votive holder, right up to its edge. Spread this out down your table or group together in the center. Use a strong fruity or spicy flavor of jelly beans. When you light the candle and the votive warms, the scent of the candy will fill the room. I don’t know about you, but some fun candy scents definitely make me think of Easter and baskets filled with goodies!

You could also use a large, flat shaped bowl and place in several votives then fill with jellybeans. This could also work with a hurricane vase and a larger candle.

Have fun with this and see how simple and fun entertaining at home can be!
